The Best Beach Wagon for Toddlers: Top Picks from a Mom of 4 (2023)

Sharing is caring!

If you do a search for “the best beach wagon for toddlers” you will be bombarded with hundreds of articles reviewing and rating the best kids’ wagon for the beach.

What you most likely WON’T find is an article written by an actual mom, of actual toddlers, who has actually taken them to the beach. And how can you know whether or not a wagon is actually the best beach wagon for toddlers and the beach if you haven’t actually tested them out?

I am a mom to 4 children, ages 9, 7, 7 (yes, they are twins!), and 3. I have been going on solo beach adventures with toddlers since my oldest, Theo, was 3.5, and my twins, Josie and Margo, were 1.5.

Is it easier to take my husband, and be slightly less outnumbered? Yes, of course. However, it’s no fun to sit around the house all day with a bunch of wild toddlers when we can get to the beach and burn energy! So, that’s what we did.

And while our needs have changed quite a bit over the years, my choice of wagon has not. So, whether you’re heading to sandy beaches or exploring rough terrains, these wagons are sure to make your beach days a breeze. From seat belts to storage space and everything in between, I’ve got you covered. So, grab your beach chairs, pack your beach gear, and let’s dive into the world of the best beach wagons for toddlers!

As I have not actually tested every single one of these wagons, I have done extensive research about every wagon on this post.

And by research, I don’t mean simply reading Amazon reviews! I have actually talked to other moms about these wagons. I have perused my local mom facebook groups to see what THEY had to say about beach wagons for toddlers. And lastly, if I haven’t been able to get good, solid advice about a wagon, I have looked for videos of the wagons being pulled in the sand.

Best Beach Wagons For Toddlers: (for hauling gear, NOT for children)

You may be surprised to learn that my favorite beach wagon for toddlers, does not, in fact, hold toddlers!

If you are looking for a wagon that can hold your stuff AND your kids, keep scrolling. However, this wagon was absolutely perfect for me tackling the beach solo. Here’s why:

The wagons that are designed to pull children have a low center of gravity and are harder to pull across the sand. It is doable with ONE toddler. With THREE toddlers AND all of your gear, it is extremely difficult.

I preferred to have a wagon that I could pull with one hand from the parking lot to the beach. I held my toddlers’ by the other hand and they held hands with each other, and we paraded through the parking lot that way.

Never once did we attract any comments such as “You’ve got your hands full!” Nope, never 😉

I loved doing the beach this way. It taught my children to be careful while walking through the parking lot and got them used to walking onto the beach themselves.

We would always leave the beach before nap time, and I bribed them with a treat in the car to give them the motivation to walk back themselves.

1. Best Beach Wagon for Sand: Rio Brands Wonder Wheeler Deluxe Beach Utility Foldable Cart

Price range: $100-$120

Weight limit: 100 pounds

Features and functions: As you can see, the Rio Beach wagon has 2 very sturdy and big wheels in the front, making it excellent for rough terrain. Since it has a higher center of gravity, it is so much easier to pull in the sand than the actual wagons that are low to the ground and on 4 wheels.

It has storage compartments that keep all your beach gear organized, from small items like water bottles and beach toys to larger items such as your beach bag and beach umbrella. There is a soft cooler attached that I usually store our water bottles in. I place our regular cooler on the bottom part underneath the mesh bag. I then fill the canvas part with the rest of our beach gear. There is also a rack on one end for beach chairs.

It is extremely easy to fold up and fits in the trunk of our van easily with the rest of our beach gear.

Seating arrangements: none

Ease of pulling in the sand: 10/10

If durability and functionality in the SAND are what you’re after, the Rio Brands Wonder Wheeler Deluxe Beach Utility Foldable Cart is a top contender. It’s a great beach cart with oversized wheels, this wagon glides smoothly over soft sand.

Just a note: This wagon is identical to the Tommy Bahama All Terrain Cart. They go back in forth on price, get whichever one is cheaper.

2. Mac Sports Heavy Duty Steel Frame Collapsible Folding Outdoor Wagon Cart

Price range: $135-$260

Weight limit: 150 pounds

Features and functions:

When it comes to heavy loads and durability, the Mac Sports Heavy Duty Steel Frame Collapsible Folding Wagon Cart is a great choice. With a weight capacity of up to 150 pounds, this wagon has plenty of room for beach chairs, umbrellas, and even larger items like coolers. While it doesn’t come with seats for toddlers, just like the Rio, it has a heavier weight limit.

If you need something that can carry more weight than the Rio Beach wagon, this should do it for you.

It has a sturdy, steel frame and large wheels making it perfect for hauling all your beach essentials.

When the fun is over, the collapsible design allows for easy storage, saving you precious space in your car or garage. The Mac Sports Heavy Duty Wagon is a reliable and sturdy choice for families with heavy loads of beach gear.

Seating arrangements: none

Ease of pulling in the sand: 8.5/10

Talking to actual parents who have used this wagon in the sand and while it is possible to pull it through thick, loose sand, it is not the easiest. If you’re planning a beach trip with 2 adults and 1 can handle the wagon while the other handles the kiddos, this could work.

3. Beau Jardin Folding Beach Wagon

Price range: $130-$140

Weight limit: 300 pounds

Features and functions: The BEAU JARDIN Folding Beach Wagon Cart is a versatile and reliable option for beach trips and outdoor adventures. This folding beach wagon offers a spacious and durable design, making it perfect for carrying beach gear, picnic supplies, and more.

With its maximum weight capacity, it can handle heavy loads without compromising stability. The large wheels are designed to navigate various terrains, including rough terrain and sandy beaches, ensuring a smooth ride for your little ones. The folding feature allows for easy storage and transportation, making it convenient for trips to the beach or the garden.

It also has mesh cupholders and ample storage!

Seating arrangements: none

Ease of pulling in the sand: 8/10

This is also a wagon that doesn’t actually hold your toddlers (just all of their gear!!). It is VERY similar to the Mac Heavy Duty Wagon that I listed above and has the same issues. It travels great on hard sand but is more difficult on loose, soft sand because it is a bigger wagon.

4. HAUSHOF Heavy Duty Collapsible Wagon

Price range: $130-$140

Weight limit: 176 pounds

Features and functions: The HAUSHOF is a fully collapsible utility wagon that can simplify many daily tasks, such as taking out your garden tools or carrying your groceries. It is also extremely easy to clean so it works very well as an outdoor utility wagon.

However, it has to be noted that the wheels are NOT made for all terrain. Since it is so lightweight and has great ease of use, I included it as a decent beach wagon. If you’re going to be beaching with lots of stuff and traveling primarily on a boardwalk, I would consider this wagon.

Seating arrangements: None

Ease of pulling in the sand: 3.5/10

While reviewers say that it is lighter and less clunky than the Mac wagon, the wheels are not heavy-duty and good for sand. So, if you’re going to be using this primarily on a beach with boardwalks, it will be a great option for you!

But if you need it for long walks in the sand, pass on this option.

Best Wagons for Toddlers (not beach gear)

OK. I understand that most parents are not willingly going to haul beach gear and let 3 toddlers walk through the parking lot. If I had 3 toddlers that are like my 4th baby, it would not happen. I don’t trust him not to run away from me or demand that I carry him on top of the 85 things that I’m already carrying.

So, if your goal is to pull your kiddos across the parking lot, here are reviews of these wagons. They can definitely hold a few small bags, beach towels, etc, but most of them won’t hold everything you need for a day at the beach PLUS a handful of kids.

While I haven’t personally used any of these wagons, I made sure to NOT simply read Amazon and Google reviews and share those results here’ but to talk to moms who have actually used these strollers in the sand.

One thing I will say is that we all have different perspectives, and I did find occasionally that 5 moms would rave about the ease of the all-terrain wheels, while another mom would tell me it’s the worst wagon she’s ever used.

So let’s keep that in mind and forge ahead!

5. Radio Flyer 3 in 1 Off Road EZ Fold Wagon:

Price range: $150-$160

Weight limit: 150 pounds

Features and functions: One of the standout features of the Radio Flyer 3 in 1 Off-Road EZ Fold Wagon is its effortless folding and unfolding mechanism. It is extremely easy to fold it down to store in your garage or vehicle.

The seats can also be folded down, creating a flatbed for hauling cargo or providing a spacious area to play, nap, or enjoy a picnic lunch.

There are 2 built-in cup holders and a removable canopy, making it a great choice for UV protection!

Seating arrangements: 2 children ages 1.5 and up. The Radio Flyer 3 in 1 Off Road EZ Fold Wagon can seat 2 toddlers with seat belts. Keep in mind that they are not 5-point harnesses, so this is not a good beach wagon for babies or younger toddlers. The side can also unzip for stationary bench seating.

Ease of pulling in the sand: 3/10

While it states that it is an off-road wagon, the wheels are not the easiest to maneuver over sand. You can tell just by looking at them that they don’t compare to other wagons.

The Radio Flyer 3 in 1 Off Road EZ Fold Wagon is the most affordable wagon on this list, but it still has great features for a foldable beach wagon.

In conclusion, for a budget collapsable wagon, this is a good choice. If you have a higher budget and want something that maneuvers better in the sand, then keep reading!

6. Hauck Eco Wagon

Price range: $250-$270

Weight limit: 110 pounds

Features and functions: This foldable wagon is equipped with large all-terrain wheels (and they are actually all-terrain wheels!! just look at how nice and big they are!) that provide smooth and effortless maneuverability on various surfaces, such as sand.

It has a large capacity, allowing you to transport beach gear, camping equipment, and more.

The wagon is constructed with a sturdy steel frame and a durable, washable fabric that can withstand heavy loads and frequent beach day outings. It has a pull function only, you cannot push it!

It also has easy folding for storage and transportation! With a simple pull of a handle, the wagon quickly folds down to a compact size.

Seating arrangements: 2 children, ages 2+. Since this wagon lacks seatbelts, it is truly meant for older toddlers. The floor is just one cushioned area to sit on. There are no seatbelts or defined seats.

Ease of pulling in the sand: 9/10

While the Hauck Eco Wagon doesn’t have all of the features that some of the fancier wagons do, I have heard from parents that it is one of the best folding wagons to actually travel over the loose, fine sand.

This wagon has two downsides. The first is that it does not include built-in seats or seatbelts, so if you really need to keep your toddlers contained, this is not for you! The second con is that the handlebars are not adjustable, making this not the most comfortable option for taller people.

In conclusion, the Hauck Eco Wagon is one of the easiest stroller wagons to maneuver through the sand. It might not be the wagon for you if you are on the taller side or need to contain your toddlers with seat belts.

7. Jeep Deluxe Wrangler Stroller Wagon

If you’re a fan of the iconic Jeep Wrangler and want a beach wagon that reflects that rugged style, the Jeep Deluxe Wrangler Stroller Wagon is an excellent choice.

Price range: $399

Weight limit: 110 pounds

Features and functions: With its metal frame and large wheels, this wagon is built to handle rough terrains. There are 2 handlebars that are adjustable, so you can either push or pull.

It has a removable canopy and roll-down shades to offer sun protection. If you choose to remove the canopy while you’re out for a stroll, it fits right in the storage compartment. There is also a decent storage compartment for parent organization, as well as a cooler that can hold up to 18 cans and a cup holder.

Seating arrangements: This stroller wagon can be used with a car seat adaptor and it is included. It also has two padded seats with five-point safety harnesses, ensuring your children’s comfort and security during the ride (meaning, your toddler can’t jump out!)

Ease of pulling in the sand: 5/10

The steel frame is heavy duty and the wheels are all-terrain and handle decently well over sand. Pulling is easier than pushing, but the tires still dig into the sand.

8. Veer Cruiser

So many parents absolutely love the Veer Cruiser.

One of the standout features is its robust construction. It boasts a sturdy frame made from aircraft-grade aluminum, ensuring durability and stability even on bumpy surfaces. The large, air-filled tires with deep tread patterns are designed to tackle uneven terrain effortlessly.

But, the big question is: does it handle well on the beach?

Price range: $700

Weight limit: 300 pounds of cargo (with no children) or 55 pounds per child seat (2 seats).

Features and functions: The Veer Cruiser Stroller is a versatile and innovative all-terrain stroller designed to provide parents with the ultimate in convenience and flexibility. It combines the functionality of a traditional stroller with the ruggedness of an off-road wagon, allowing you to navigate various terrains with ease while keeping your toddlers comfortable and secure.

It features an adjustable handlebar, allowing for comfortable pushing or pulling regardless of your height. The one-hand folding mechanism enables quick and easy storage, and the compact fold size makes it convenient for transportation in most vehicles.

The fabric is stain-resistant and completely hose washable (this is life-changing with toddlers!)

It comes with a snack tray and cup holders and has a compact, one-hand open and fold.

Seating arrangements: Versatility is a key aspect of the Veer Cruiser. It can be used as a traditional stroller with a comfortable and adjustable seat for your child, complete with a three-point harness for safety. The stroller is also compatible with various infant car seats, making it completely adaptable for newborns and young infants!

It is good to note that the car seat adapters are sold separately.

Alternatively, you can remove the seat and transform the stroller into a wagon, allowing you to carry additional gear, groceries, or even your pet. The spacious cargo area accommodates a generous amount of items, making it perfect for outings or trips to the park.

Ease of pulling in the sand: 7/10

BUT DOES IT HANDLE WELL IN SAND? It is definitely doable. While it isn’t necessarily EASY, it isn’t excruciatingly hard. If you drop the handlebar as low as it will go, it helps to make it easier to pull through the sand. It is definitely easier to pull than push through sand.

9. WONDERFOLD W4 Original Quad Stroller Wagon

The Wonderfold W4 Original Quad Stroller Wagon is like the Mercedes Benz of stroller wagons. This would have been a dream to have when I had 3 toddlers! They definitely have a cult following. Parents LOVE this wagon!

Let’s find out how it works as a beach wagon.

Price range: $695

Weight limit: 300 pounds

Features and functions: Compared to the Veer, the WONDERFOLD has more space for your kiddos to play, snack, and nap in, while the Veer is better for maneuvering through tough areas.

Seating arrangements: Seats 4 kids, ages 6+ months. Each seat is removable and has a 5-point harness.

The standout feature of the WONDERFOLD W4 is the unique quad seating configuration, which comfortably accommodates up to four children. Each seat is equipped with a 5-point safety harness, ensuring the utmost safety during rides.

Ease of pulling in the sand: 3/10

Equipped with durable and puncture-resistant wheels, the WONDERFOLD W4 can handle various terrains, including grass, gravel, and even uneven surfaces. The front wheels can swivel for easy maneuverability, while the rear wheels have a built-in suspension system, ensuring a smooth and comfortable ride for your little ones.

That being said, just because something is advertised as all-terrain, does not mean that it is. I have heard firsthand from parents that this stroller is heavy and does not handle well in the sand.

In conclusion, to me, the Wonderfold W4 Original Quad Stroller Wagon seems like the perfect stroller wagon for outings such as the park, zoo, etc. I personally would not consider it to be a beach wagon though.

Could you lug it through the sand if it’s your only option? Sure, but is it worth the $700-$900 price tag as a subpar beach stroller? I don’t think so.

10. Evenflo Pivot Xplore All-Terain Stroller Wagon:

The Evenflo Pivot Xplore All-Terrain Stroller Wagon Adventurer is a versatile and adventure-ready companion for families on the go. With its rugged design, easy transformation between stroller and wagon modes, and comfortable seating for your children, it offers a convenient and enjoyable way to explore various terrains

Price range: $320

Weight limit: 55 pounds per seat

Features and functions: The Pivot Xplore easily converts from pushing like a stroller to pulling as a wagon simply by flipping the handle. It’s a truly genius design!

It comes with a spacious storage basket that can pivot to be inside the wagon if there’s only 1 child riding. It has two adjustable sun canopies to offer sun protection, but reviews state that not only are the canopies on the smaller side and don’t offer much protection but that it’s hard for taller children to actually fit underneath the canopies.

Seating arrangements: It can hold 2 children, ages 6 months to 5 years old. You can add a stroller seat or car seat (adaptors are sold separately), making it truly versatile.

The best beach wagon for toddlers

Ease of pulling in the sand: 5/10

Despite not handling that well in the sand, this stroller wagon has rave reviews, especially considering that it costs a remarkably less amount of money than the Veer and the Wonderfold.

While it handles better than the Wonderfold, it doesn’t handle nearly as well as the Veer or especially the Hauck.

11. Gladly Family Anthem4 Quad All Terrain Stroller

The Anthem4 All-Terrain Wagon Stroller is specifically engineered to handle rugged outdoor conditions. It features large, sturdy wheels with durable treads that provide excellent traction and stability on uneven surfaces such as gravel and gravel. This allows you to venture off the beaten path and explore new destinations with confidence, knowing that the stroller will glide smoothly and reliably.

It is also available as an option with 2 seats only!

Price range: $649

Weight limit: 250 pounds

Features and functions: One of the standout features of the Gladly Family Anthem4 is its easy push-and-pull design. The ergonomic handlebar allows for effortless maneuverability, whether you’re pushing the stroller or pulling it in wagon mode. This makes it convenient for parents to navigate through crowded areas, tight spaces, or challenging terrains, ensuring a comfortable and hassle-free experience.

There is a one-touch foot brake that is super convenient if your wagon gets away from you.

It also comes with 4 cup holders and interior mesh storage pockets and extra large, double zip canopies. Another really nice feature of the Gladly is that it comes with a stowaway mattress that easily converts as an area to take a cozy nap!

Seating arrangements: It holds 4 children with 3-point harnesses. It also can carry car seats with a car seat adaptor (sold separately).

The best beach wagon for toddlers

Ease of pulling in the sand: 7/10

This wagon handles the second best in the sand, right after the Hauk!

If you want something that has more versatility than the Hauk, I would go with this wagon as your beach wagon.

Have you used any of these wagons? Do you have a favorite beach wagon that I left out? Let me know!
